With many counting the days until the A-N 87 Tailgate Blowout, I want to provide a reunion update regarding hotel reservations and room blocks.
BLUF: The room block at The Thayer Hotel has not be finalized and released to the class.
Our 30th Reunion is Sept 28-1 Oct 2017. When we selected that weekend in Feb 2016 we were the only class scheduled to have a reunion. Since that time the football schedule changed and the Class of 1972 also requested this weekend.
For the last few months, we have been in negotiations with The Thayer Hotel to secure a block of rooms for our reunion. The amount of rooms in that block has not been finalized. We anticipate doing so by the end of December it.
The Thayer Hotel imposed a significant food and beverage requirement on us to which we did not agree given that we had previously secured other venues for major reunion events. In addition, we did host our formal dinner at the 25th at The Thayer. We asked Gen Caslen, the Superintendent, and his SJA and C of S to review their operating agreement as we believe The Thayer Hotel is using their leverage as the only on-site accommodations to force the hand of reunion classes to use their facilities at the expenses of other entities and organizations on post.
During each of our previous reunions, we have made a deliberate effort to utilize a variety of facilities to support all entities on post that support cadet activities. Previously, we have used Eisenhower Hall Ballroom and Ike’s Café for a formal dinner and a class luncheon. These locations support the Directorate of Cadet Activities (DCA). We have had a tailgate at Buffalo Soldiers Field which supports West Point’s MWR. We have held numerous cocktail parties and receptions at Herbert Hall that supports the Association of Graduates. In addition, we have held three golf tournaments at the West Point Course. For this 30th reunion, we are planning our formal dinner at the West Point Club which supports West Point’s MWR and our Saturday tailgate at Trophy Point which supports DCA.
After review, it is verified that USMA have a lease, contract, and operating agreement with the Thayer, and they are not violating any provisions of those in their business practices, so USMA can exert no leverage on them.
Once we have secured the block of rooms, we will provide the class an update and how to book making that announcement through this email list and the class Facebook page. Room reservations will be on a first come – first serve basis. Should you secure a room reservation for the reunion weekend and at a later date change plans or find other accommodations, please offer your reservation to other classmates and do not cancel. Again, the block will be limited. We are hoping to have this block finalized in the next few weeks and anticipate release in January.
As for other hotels in the vicinity, most will not offer blocks of rooms until January. We do encourage you to start looking in advance of any announcement.
Best and Let’s tailgate!
